As I travel during the day I often get the chance to hear various religious radio shows that I of course test against God's Word. Today I was listening to a roman catholic program on relevant radio with host Drew Mariani. I want to be very clear in stating up front that roman catholic theology is very unbiblical and it lacks the saving truth Jesus said we must have to worship the Father ( John 4:24 )
The show segment was about giving to the needy and it was about a man who spends his own money to buy food for the homeless in Chicago. (a very worthy cause indeed) But what was interesting was as he described how he buys food and hands it out; he said several things that really show the false doctrines of the RC faith system. I want to highlight them for you in this post as a teaching moment.
1 ) The man said that he never judges the homeless. He explained it like this; he knows they made mistakes and are down and out so he doesn't talk to them about those mistakes like drugs or alcohol ( sin ) at all. His only interest is to meet a few of their physical needs. (Coffee, a burger, some gloves or socks) Along with that he stated that he doesn't preach to them or talk about faith at all.
If we look at the truth of God's Word... we see that this man is missing the entire point of helping those around him. Jesus told us to do what? Go and just hand out burgers to the homeless right? Well not really! He said go and proclaim the gospel and make disciples in His name.
Matt 28:19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
While we should help feed the true hungry people we see, if we do not proclaim a biblical saving gospel to them they will perish with full stomachs, right into hell. This kind man has a very poor theology as a life long roman catholic and the fact is; he can't give away what he doesn't have which is eternal life to come! He should be feeding them and telling them the good news which is to repent and be baptized in His name for the remission of sin ( Acts 2 )
This is a common roman catholic error as was modeled by mother Theresa ( who was mentioned on this same radio show ). They meet physical needs but have NOTHING of biblical truth for the eternal soul. The entire roman catholic system is made up of such man made false works / man made ways / see a post on that system of faith below.
2) When the radio host asked him "why are you doing this...feeding these homeless people"?
The man answered very honestly and he exposes both his own selfish goal and the another major error of the RC faith as well. He told Drew that when he died & stood before God, and when God says why should I let you into heaven? He wants the Lord to see he did good works!
Did you see the motive of helping others that he had? It wasn't motivated most by the love for God / a fellow homeless men that Jesus called us to have. Matt 22:39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
No, it was only so God will let him into heaven one day. He didn't really care about those people at all as he leaves them to die and go to hell. And he is clearly NOT counting on Jesus work on the cross but his own righteousness for salvation. This man will perish unless he repents and trusts in Christ! This is called a man made works based salvation and it is taught by the entire roman catholic faith system and it is very unbiblical. By the way Drew, the show's host, said amen to it all and he never corrected anything the man had said. Sadly, Drew is also going to perish unless he turns ( repents ) of RC false doctrine and is born again in Christ ( John 3:3 ) ( I will attempt to reach out to Drew and report back here on how it goes? )
Please understand that you can do nothing to obtain eternal life via works. We must place faith in Christ then He works in us as fruit.

You must have faith in His work, repent, be born again, and place your trust there to be saved, strive in holiness, in the end eternal life after you endure this life. (Matthew 10) There are many other verses that also show our works are not for salvation but; fruit of it. While we will do good works as the FRUIT, we are redeemed and His true people, we do not do works to gain salvation before the Almighty God of Creation.
