Christians Should Reject The Games ( the NFL) of This Fallen Culture

Note:
The following article is for those who are born again by this biblical gospel, not corrupt churchianity. See the path to eternal life HERE

This site is about biblical discernment and our goal is to help others walk through this sinful world and still honor a Holy God who has brought us redemption in Christ.
One cannot walk very far in this world or talk with those lost in the culture without hearing about the NFL and their big Super Bowl game to come.

Let us use the basic and important discernment scripture of Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Is it pure or true or lovely or of good report?
We can easily see that the NFL and the Super Bowl is not super at all for those who have their eyes set on the holiness of God.  Since it is time for nations "favorite game" we will just ask this question:

Knowing this...should a biblical born again follower of Christ be involved in this secular, godless and worldly event?

The fact is that the life of a biblical Christian is one that calls us to sacrifice, obedience and holiness in the name of our Savior and Lord.  We often have to discern what we will and will not be part of if we aim to honor our God. If we are in Him, our lives are no longer our own but ALL for His glory, amen? Since we live in Wisconsin, we are right in the middle of football fanatic territory!

So we thought we would do this post (using God's Word) on the 8 top reasons why a Christ follower should discern that they should avoid the NFL/Super Bowl" and all that comes with it.

First let's keep in mind that God is to always be glorified. This post is aimed at those who "claim salvation" in the most High Holy One, Jesus Christ. If even one of these reasons hits home, it has to be dealt with if we take our faith most serious. Once you see all 8 biblical reasons then you can discern if this event is worthy of a person who has been set apart for Gods holy purpose and glory?
Note: If you're angry with this message; we are sorry for you but the truth is you may just love your sin!

Reason #1

Violence

As an ex football and ice hockey fan; I know that a big part of the draw is the violence of a good hit against your opponent. If you were to take away the hard hitting/tackling of the NFL... the game would die! People can lie but they like that aspect as it feeds the carnal flesh of man.  Jesus talked about the last days of man and in it he said it would be like the days of Noah.  If you read what God said about Noah's day.... the earth was filled with what?  Violence!

And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.  Genesis 6:13

God's true holy people are not to feed our flesh or crave this carnal form of worldly entertainment but to avoid it for His glory and honor.

Reason #2.... why a believing Christian should avoid the NFL/Super Bowl" and all that comes with it!

Idolatry

Pro sports in America has become idolatry to the masses. It is more than just a game today. It is a business of sex pushing, alcohol, greed, pride, glory to man, carnal, flesh feeding and yes.... idol-ness. Nothing about it is glorifying to a holy God.

The bible clearly states:
"You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3)
So what is idolatry: the worship of false gods or the extreme / excessive admiration or love shown for somebody or something.

It is not just the worship of a statue but anything that takes more of our love, time and attention than God Himself. Please ask yourself Christian, have you allowed your love for sports and entertainment to over take your words, thoughts, time and heart over the things of a most Holy Lord? A false god in your life is anything that gets more attention, desire and emotion than the One who redeemed us with His blood. Do you put as much energy and emotion into studying God's Word or proclaiming the gospel as cheering at these pagan games?

Many professing believers we run across talk much more about football than the goodness of God. We always like to remind them that the bible says this in 2 Corinthians 10:5-
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
Then we ask them.... how do you take every thought captive while watching a violent, sex riddled, glory to man, pride filled game? (They never have a good answer.)

Sadly, most misguided modern pastors are usually involved in feeding this vain waste of time to their very body of believers when Titus 1 calls them to be sound in the doctrine, holy and sober. Our Lord requires that we give ALL of ourselves to Him and His cause so this is a warning sign indeed. Those sin filled stadiums and broadcasts are for the un-regenerated heathen and pagan to gather and watch, not for those who have been made "righteous" new creations in Him; unless you're there to hand out gospel tracts. We are to avoid any appearance of idolatry in ALL things, if we claim Him, amen?

Reason #3 why a believing Christian should avoid the NFL/Super Bowl" and all that comes with it!

Do not conform to the world's ways.

There is a theme that runs though the New Testament and it calls out to those who claim salvation in Christ. It is the call to be IN the world to proclaim the gospel; but to not be OF the world! Can you think of anything that represents the fallen worlds ways more than the man honoring spectacle of this largest annual sporting event? Every vile ailment of our society is tied to the Super Bowl itself! (Drunkenness, immoral sexual images, greed to win, glory & and honor to man, violence, pride, lust of the flesh just to name a few.)

Romans 12:2: "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God".

This verse tells the believer to NOT conform to what the world does, it calls us to be transformed in our thinking with a renewed mind for God (have you been renewed?) so that we can rightly see what is GOOD and ACCEPTABLE to the Lord. Knowing the Lord is a Holy Holy Holy God, is this event filled with carnal, violent images/desires, acceptable for those who wish to honor our King? How can we know being involved in this event is NOT the will of God? Because He has told us in His word:

Ephesians 5:5
"For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Since there is nothing pure about pro sport events, we can know it is thus "impure" for the believer who claims Christ to partake in it. If we are not by His Spirit on guard for impurity in our lives, it means we are not regenerated in our mind and we will fall into that which is not worthy or shames His mighty name no matter how fun it may seem to our fallen flesh! Reject the worlds ways and its impure entertainment, all for His glory.

Reason #4... why a believing Christian should avoid the NFL/ Superbowl" and all that comes with it!

The Holy Spirit is in you ....(or is He?)

If you have really committed your life to Christ, His Spirit is within you. God's Word instructs us how to live our lives; those who have found new life in God though Christ. His Word is our example of how to live in this current evil day. Note: His Spirit dwells within the believer so where we go and what we do, we take the Holy Spirit with us as well. What we see, He will see with us and we are to NOT grieve Him.

Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

God's Word tells us much about what to avoid:

Psalm 119:37 says, Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

Proverbs 16:17 says The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.

1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

An event like the Super Bowl is built upon godless man and his carnal evil desires. It matters not that some claim to be believers (Aaron Rodgers) and they even play in these games. They are either very deceived or have sold out to sin. I know this well as I have personally communicated with Mr Rogers pastor who is a wolf in sheeps garb. Pro football has many negative social aspects which we will cover. As we learned from Paul in Ephesians 5; greed, impurity and a immoral life makes one a idolater. In the end, pro sports does not lift up our Risen Lord in holiness, so indeed it is worthless and should be avoided by His own lest we grieve Him.

Reason #5 ...why a believing Christian should avoid the NFL/Superbowl and all the that comes with it!

Be ye holy...

Is the conduct of a born again believer in all things, important to God? Should we avoid those things that are not worthy of His nature? The answer is yes! The world's form of entertainment  (the Super Bowl) laced with unholy images and actions; is just NOT becoming of a holy life if we follow Jesus with all that we are. Anyone who has spent anytime reading God's Word, will know that the word "holiness" is often referred to for both the nature of God and those who He has saved though the blood of Christ.  What does holy mean? To be set apart and devoted to the service of God.

Now we know God is holy in fact the bible says, "He is HOLY HOLY HOLY"! In the language of that day Hebrew, saying things twice was making a very stern point. But saying it three times was the boldest of proclamation and it was only done once to state His Holy nature. Lets look at some scriptures:

 1 Peter 1:13-16, Peter writes to believers, Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

( ALL our behavior it says... not 90% of the time but all the time! )

Isaiah 6:3 says: And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Leveticus 20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God.

It is very clear from the bibles teachings how believers should conduct themselves. We are not allowed to take breaks from our quest to please Him. We are called to not touch or view anything unholy. Read on:

Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord

Now ask yourself this.... is sitting and partaking of the carnal superbowl that has nothing to do with holiness but has everything to do with mans unholy ways; drawing you closer to God or further away? Need we say more? Come out of the world's ways and be set apart for His good purpose Christian, lest you defile the HOLY Lord we serve every minute of everyday! Yes, even on Superbowl Sunday!

Reason #6....why a believing Christian should avoid the NFL/Superbowl and all that comes with it!

Enjoying this world's fallen ways is a bad witness to the lost and other believers

The Super Bowl is billed as one of the largest "sporting events" of the year. The world is watching they say. Sadly it has so much to offer the person who enjoys all kinds of experiences, though most go against Gods nature. But as we walk thought this world we must discern; what is it that pleases God and what does not? Will it honor our God if the world see's us indulging in its carnal whims? We think not!

Again, we can go to His holy word to tell us and we don't have to guess. If we are His we are part of His body the church, we must act accordingly. That word church means "called out & and separated ones". How are we separate? By the way we live and what we do / desire from this fallen world. The bible goes on to tell us that we should not love the things of this world or be friends with that world.

1John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

The word of God instructs us to not be friends with the world or we may become Gods enemy.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

This is all for calling us out of this world so we can be holy and separate for His good purpose. We are to be very different so we can show others that God has changed our once sinful lives and this will draw those who see, their own lostness. We are to witness His love to them but not be just like them. Denominational religion has failed in teaching this to our current generation it seems. Partaking in the huge secular event that the world loves and desires is NOT how we set ourselves apart but that is how we join in their folly. Please consider these things if you want your walk to be marked by His righteousness, lest we look like the world and ruin our witness for His cause! Remember our God is watching on too and He is no pleased with the "mingling of the world" with his saved ones He bought at the cross of Christ!

Reason #7....why a believing Christian should avoid the NFL/Superbowl and all that comes with it!

"It feeds the carnal flesh of mankind"

What is the Super Bowl all about? Well since it has nothing to do with the purity, holiness and lasting truths of Gods word, it is then all about mans carnal side. The game itself is designed to feed man's sinful flesh! It is indeed violent, pride filled, man honoring and boastful. The event is built upon money from the sales of idol marked goods, gross sexual immorality and mass alcohol consumption. What does God's Word say about how the believer is to handle the flesh that we are cursed with as men? Paul teaches us to what......... indulge the flesh? Oh no, he said crucify it and reign it in for the glory of God.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Here are verses that talked about our flesh:

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

How did Paul deal with sin in the body?
1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Scripture is so clear that the flesh leads us astray and not to anything that pleases our Holy God.
So the question is WHY would a born again believer want to partake in that which is totally of the flesh? Could it be you really do enjoy feeding your flesh? We know this: we have to battle ours daily, lest we become ensnaired in it as we once were. But if we claim His salvation we are to "crucify" our flesh and that means simply dont feed it with images of mans spectacle. Starve it to death by avoiding the event. Feed on the things of God and grow in holiness for His glory!

Reason #8...why a believing Christian should avoid the NFL/Superbowl and all that comes with it!

It is built on immorality and it is quite worthless while Christ followers are to be separate

The act of tossing a football in itself is not a sinful thing. If one was to toss a ball around with his son or friends, it is a great way to get exercise indeed. The issue of today's pro sports is not tossing a ball itself but "what" has built the industry into what it is today and the control it has on its fans?

In order to grow so large, the pro sports people have merged themselves with the corporate world for marketing and fund raising purposes. How can a team build huge stadiums and pay huge salaries you ask? They sell ads to market various goods to fans watching. What are they marketing....oh  many things but sex and alcohol is a staple indeed. Gross immodesty is displayed by players, cheerleaders and fans as well. Families will sit and be influenced by soft porn at games and lustful beer ads on tv, this is not of God who says keep your eyes from ALL impurity.

Did you know that multi billions of dollars is gambled away on this game alone? If this does not promote greed and materialism, what does I ask?

Did you know that multi million gallons of beer will be consumed and we all know drunken-ness is a sin unto the Lord. Studies show that children are drawn to the beer ads as their favorites as they aim at them with cute horses and puppies to promote and try their alcohol products.

Did you also know that the area around the Super Bowl can also be invaded by prostitutes or under aged children making a premium for their pimps during the game weekend? Who is using these sex workers? That would be the loyal NFL fan who goes there to see the big game for his fleshly fun!

What is the game itself built on? The "greed" to win. (Some call it idolatry.)

Ephesians 5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints

Violence is at the core here as we cheer when men are hit hard and knocked to the ground. Not for defending their families from harm but for pure entertainment alone! On to team "pride" we go as it is another huge issue the bible says that pride is very sinful/harmful to man and the Lord's name.

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall

How about giving so much honor and glory to man? All honor and glory goes to God in the life of those who claim to be born again in Him. Next, the bible calls all believers to redeem (use it with wisdom) their time and not waste what God has given us in worthless worldly things. Spending the untold hours of time viewing "carnal" football over a 6 month season is not consistent with the nature of a godly man or woman. Lastly, the word church means called out ones and so we are to be separated from the immoral ways of the world. On this day; when all the carnal flesh desiring world is watching we, His holy people, should be about other things that glorify God and not involved in mans fun or entertainment.

In the end, the better question to ask oneself who claims Christ is this: What is "right" about partaking in what the world does for mass entertainment and fun?  And does this bring you closer to God?

Men... how are you taking EVERY thought captive for Christ while watching such a thing as the NFL that is of these 8 points?

casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ  2 Corinthains 10:5

Jonah 2:8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

Many will say "it is men just using their talents before God". Would that also include a thief and a stripper too? No, if a act is sinful God does not care about your talent for it does He?

Please stand strong, discern the truth and know; if you claim Jesus you have a course of action to take to better serve and please a Holy Holy Holy God.
