"May he rest in peace"

We always find it amazing the many phrases or sayings that man has developed over the years especially the religious ones. You will often here people say when someone dies "may he rest in peace" and we may see the letters RIP on a tombstone. So where did the saying come from? If you look into history you will see it was first used by certain Jews as far back as the 7th century and then it was made more popular by the pagan roman catholic faith during the dark ages. It only became very popular here in America about the 18th century and it is meant to wish someone that has died; peace in the next life to come. Is that peace available for just anyone at all?

While that may seem to be a nice thought and you may often hear it at just about every funeral; according to God's Word just how does someone find eternal peace in the life to come? Is it available for just anyone or if not: what must a person do to have the hope of peace in eternity? Again as discerning followers of Jesus Christ, let us go to His Holy Word for the answer and not just follow man's philosophies and traditions that can deceive us in so many ways. (Colossians 2:8)

The bible tells us that
it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Hebrews 9:27

We also know that according to Romans 3:23
all have sinned and fall short of God's glory

By these verses we know there is a judgment to come and that all have sinned. So how could we hope to find this rest and peace beyond the fate?

Romans 5:1 says this:
"we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ"

So it is by and through Christ we have that peace. Is it just a mere belief or is it something more we need?

Since Jesus Christ came to earth as fully man and fully God it would seem His words are the utmost of importance to those who desire to know the truth about eternal life.
He said this:
"I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the Father but by me"
John 14:6

He is the ONLY way and there is no peace without Him as our Lord and Savior. But how do we "have Him" according the Word?

There is a REST that is available to those who come to Christ for new life / salvation.

Matthew 11:28
Jesus said: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
How can you receive that "rest" in Him?

He also said this:
Repent lest you perish Luke 13:3 and "A man must be born again to see the kingdom of God"
John 3:3

We see then that a man needs to repent of his sin (turn from) and be born ( new life spiritually) into Christ for new life, rest and peace to come. But what else...is that all there is?

God's Word also tells us that He (Jesus) gained eternal life for those... who obey Him
Hebrews 5:9

And Jesus Himself said this:
If you love me keep my commands
John 14:15

So a man who is going to get "Christ's peace and rest eternally" will be marked by a life of holiness, biblical obedience and a dedication to Him and His Word; not a false religious system, carnal worldliness(darkness) or made up beliefs.

Christ also said this about the love of God for true believers and a warning to those who love their sin (darkness)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
John 3:16-21

Lastly, Jesus Christ also warned us that in order to worship God; we must worship in spirit and truth John 4:24

(Jesus also warned against practicing man made religious rules and traditions in Mark 7)

So it seems to make sense that this would eliminate false man made modern religion (roman catholic, Lutheran, Methodist and various other denominations etc) as they are not in line with God's truth as shown in great detail (using the bible as proof) here on our website: www.dontperish.com

So to recap:
In order to find peace after death (not judgment) a person must first have a saving faith in Jesus Christ, repent of their sins and be born again into the family of God. They then must show their love and a saving faith in God by following after Jesus in total obedience and holiness. No religious acts or just 'being good' will do before a Holy God.

We all know people who have died and seemingly had either no desire for God and or they were religious but they were living life outside of God's Word as they pleased and all for themselves or the things of the world. Can they still have a hope of rest and peace after death? What if a person had not done these spiritual things we just discussed above at all and they have died? What can they expect for a after life to come? Rest and  peace or God's wrath and judgment?

Here is a stark warning indeed:
He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction.
2 Thessalonians 1:8-9

Hebrews 3:11
So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest

This judgment of hell will not be a peaceful rest for anyone sent there:
Jesus said: And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matt 13:50

In the end, we can conclude from scripture that the saying "may he rest in peace" is quite meaningless for most people unless that person was truly born again in Christ and as evidence of a saving faith was following Him in obedience to the end. Anything short of this puts one in line for God's Wrath to come due to your sin.

Based on the Word lets reject the ways and traditions of man that go against God's Word. Don't be deceived by a feel good message of "everyone is resting in peace after death" just because God is known to be loving. He is loving but that love was expressed in Christ's payment on the cross and God has wrath as well. If you reject Christ by choosing to live your own way or practicing a man made faith; (not in obedience and holiness) there will be no peace or rest for you on judgment day. There will be a fiery judgment to come for your sin, that you clearly deserve! (As do I except for my Lord's payment.) We love others enough to tell them the truth even though most will not like to hear it and most often get angry about the it. (Jesus also said His own will be hated by the world / see Matthew 10)

While RIP may be a nice "feel good idea"; it has NO real truth behind it for most men when we look at God's Eternal Word so it must be rejected. This matters as Jesus said He is the Truth.... so we must not walk in spiritual error but be obedient to His Word for His glory, amen?

Ask yourself this ....
Are you born again today and following after Christ in a biblical spirit and truth worshipful life with that hope of peace and rest to come or; are you lost or just a religious person and headed for judgment and hell?

Something to consider don't you think before it is your turn to die?
