Come As You Are ...Explained

There is a very popular term used today in many claimed Christian places. It is called:

Come as you are...

It is posted all over websites and in man made religious places today.

What does it mean?

1 ) To some it is the idea that you are to come to God just as you are and not worry about changing or cleaning up your sins and in time He will change you by His spirit and truth.

2) To others it means God takes you as you are and His grace covers all your sins even after your claim a faith in Him. They over look sin and just focus on a person's faith.

What is the real truth?

Let's dissect this phrase to get at the truth.

First, the term is NOT found in God's Word so it is a man made term. Having said that we must say a "concept of it" is found in the bible. Meaning that God calls those who are in sin to come to Him via Christ.

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

Revelation 22:17

God's Word does teach that He is welcoming to those who will come and seek after Christ. That is the great message of the gospel. But do not be deceived by those who have twisted God's Truth in man made religion.

While God calls us to Him just as we are, He requires we turn from all sin and serve Him in purity and holiness ( called repentance ). As proof let's look at Jesus own words to the lady caught in adultery.

When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:10-12

Jesus was welcoming to her BUT it was required she see her sin and then she leave it behind.

Another way to look at this "come as you are" term is this:

God will indeed clean up your inside ( the heart ) but if He does that you are no longer the same person. You are now a NEW creation 2 Corinthians 5:17 and so the old has to go and that includes your sins.

Many in seeker sensitive places and denominational corrupt bodies say 'come as you are and do not worry as we are ALL sinners'. They have NO concern for sins that exist in their own lives or in the lives of those who claim a Holy God. They allow sin and thus are either deceived or master deceivers. They are NOT of God!

For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jude 1:4

God's Word tells us we are to leave all sin and our past ways behind us once we made new in Christ.

For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
1 Peter 4:3-5

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Romans 13:13-14

Knowing what God's Word teaches we can see the
correct way to view this "come as you are" phrase.
We do come as we are then we repent and then leave all sin for His service!

Jesus came to die for us before we were born and while we were in sin.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

Now (via the gospel) having received the gift of God's grace through Christ, we NO longer live in sin but we leave it as fruit we are His.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Romans 6:1-6

If you or those you associate with do not teach you to leave all your sin or they do not even teach you what is sin; run from them! They are the wolves Paul said would come into the body of Christ.

Yes, come to Christ as you are but then know you must walk in holiness and obedience after being made new or your NOT His child of grace but a person ripe for God's wrath to come!
See 2 Thessalonians 1:8
