A so called discernment website recently did a post on what is a heretic.
Note: This article I am siting was written to defend John MacArthur from being called a heretic though; he is one. Read on to see why:
The article teaches that historically a heretic is someone who teaches something false that affects salvation or changes God.
But as Bereans we don't care what history says; we want God's Word!
In the post he does mention Titus 3 and says that is a "special case" for a man causing division in the body / schism. That is wrong!
If we go to God's Word Titus 3:10 the only place the word heretic is ever used it says:
Reject him that is an heretic, after once or twice admonition,
In the Greek the word heretic... hairetikos means:
If you choose to follow a false doctrine you're a heretic per God's Word. There is no mention of what kind of heresy makes you a heretic.
The same Greek like word hairesis is used in 1 Corinthians 11:19, Galatians 5:20 and 2 Peter 2:1 and Strongs says it means:
that which is chosen, a chosen course of thought and action; hence one's chosen opinion, tenet; according to the context, an opinion varying from the true exposition of the Christian faith
In short.... a heretic is anyone who chooses to go off and follow/teach their own ideas and false teachings vs God's known truth. It says nothing about a real heretic or that a real heresy changes God or affects salvation. This article is using the ill church fathers and unbiblical reformers ideas and not just what the bible says ( hey, does that make this writer a heretic? )
Keep in mind the man writing this believes in burning people at the stake who hold to certain heresies ( like John Calvin his other hero ) so they have to make BIG heresies and lesser heresies to pull that off but God's Word does not teach that.
In Romans 16 Paul tells us to leave anyone who departs from sound doctrine and in 2 Thessalonians 3 he says don't associate with a brother who is lazy. Apostle Paul went way deeper in his truth/separation and clinging to scripture then JD and his man made religion ever does today. The writer here is like all religious evangelicals we meet as they believe in essential doctrines theology yet Gods Word NEVER teaches we cling to essentials only but to ALL of the Word / Matthew 4:4

He then lists a bunch of known heresies and teaches you have to be in a named heresy for the title to stick to you? That is a plain lie.
If I teach people to rub a dead skunk on their foreheads to please a Holy God; I am a heretic even though there is no name for it today.
This is all more proof this man gets his theology from man NOT solely from God alone. ( what happen to sola scripture?)
He then asks the man calling John M a heretic these questions:
John MacArthur is a plain old unbiblical heretic for teaching FALSE DOCTRINES just as the Word of God describes for His people.
( Note: MacArthur's ill take the mark of the beast and still be saved false ways does affect salvation, so it is a heresy even in his ill book.)
