Divorce and Remarriage Facts That Refute Marriage Permanence

Disclaimer:
We at dontperish.com are biblical New Testament followers of Christ who have left the denominational man made religious world, we reject the ways of the culture like TV, sports, entertainment, our ladies head cover / dress (in loose, plain dresses) according to the Word of God, men in tunics, we reject all pagan ways like Christmas and Easter and we cling to ONLY the biblical church ways that Jesus ordained through Paul and the other apostles. We believe and will practice only holy, orderly controlled OPEN gatherings (mostly in homes or out doors) where all born again obedient men can bring what God gives them to share. No ONE man is in control but multiple men shall over see (elders) not lord over others. My wife and I mostly travel full time to preach / spreading the Lord's truth all over the nation.

We support ourselves and ministry and we will NOT sell any of God's truth or take donations lest we be a burden to others!

Many groups today are wrongly destroying godly families and deceiving people with the idea of marriage permanence for all saying that pre conversion divorce then remarrying is sinful. This is not a biblical teaching but one made of man by twisting/ignoring  various scripture.

Here we place some facts that refute this heretical idea of man made religion that marriage is always a one time permanent covenant, till death do you part.

Old Testament

1) God divorced Israel then Judah, then he takes Gentiles as His bride as well. God hates divorce but He did it Himself.

Jer 3 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.

2) In Ezra God told the Israelites to put away (divorce) the pagan wives to be right with God. What happened to their life long marriage bond according to marriage permanence folks?

Ezra 10:3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

3) In the OT Word adultery was punishable by death and that death set the innocent party free to marry.  Also the written divorcement likewise set the innocent party free to remarry. Deut 24 God and Moses allowed for this act. Today, fornication/adultery on a spouse, would set a person free to remarry.

When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.

4) Marriage permanence is a lie. See Dueteronomy 24:1-2

When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
It clearly states that a woman may become another man's wife and Jesus knew this when He was talking to the Pharisees (and they knew this as well).  Matthew 5

5) Dueteronomy 24 clearly shows that second marriages are binding.  The woman who is sent out of the house with a written bill of divorcement is free to marry but she may never remarry her previous spouse.  That proves the second marriage is binding and therefore not an ongoing adulterous affair as many claim. How can it be more clear?

 6) God ordained the first marriage (Adam and Eve) between 2 believers (see Genesis 2) No where do we see in scripture "God in" unbelievers marriages?

7) God allowed David and Solomon and others to have hundreds wives. 2 Sam 12:8
And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

8) God allowed polygamy in the OT Genesis 4;19
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

New Testament

 9) Jesus said the woman at the well had 5 husbands, then says the one she's with is not now her husband.  If she is only allowed one husband per life per God then He should have told her she has had 4 adulterous affairs and she is another one now. Jesus / God recognized her 5 marriages! John 4:18

For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

10) Jesus said divorce except for fornication. Clearly fornication breaks a marriage covenant.

And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. Matt 19:9

 11) For those who say these marriage commands are for all people (believers and non) and they refute the preconversion forgiveness... read in 1 Corinthians 7 where a woman is bound to her husband until he dies and she is free to marry whom she will, only in the Lord. So if 2 pagans are married and the man divorces the pagan wife she must not remarry (according to the no pre conversion people) and then if the pagan man dies, the pagan woman is free to marry BUT only in the Lord.  So a pagan woman is only free to marry a Christian?  That goes against scripture of Christians being commanded not to be yoked to an unbeliever!  So if the pagan woman marries another pagan after her first husband dies then if she becomes a Christian, she would need to (according to the non preconversion people)  divorce her current husband and get a Christian husband? This is foolishness.

 12) In 1 Corinthians 7, vs 8 Paul speaks to the unmarried (agamos) who we can see by vs 11 that agamos can mean someone who is also  divorced. Paul allowed for remarriage.

 13) Paul uses 8 verses to tell people to stay in the situation they have been called, that includes all situations such as pre-conversion divorce and remarriage.  (1 Cor 7 vs 17-24)

14) Paul says you are no longer bound if a unbeliever leaves you.
But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. 1 Cor 7:15

 15) The anabaptist/Kingdom groups and others reject once saved always saved (rightly so) as a person can indeed leave the salvation covenant with God. But then; they hypocritically cling to the covenant of marriage as totally unbreakable for life. This is foolishness, hypocrisy and not taught in scripture Old or New.

16) Mennonites and others wrongly teach this marriage permanence even though the man they are named after  (Menno) NEVER believed in it! Mennon said pre conversion divorce is forgiven and you can remarry.

Think about this fact:
At 3 pm one day Jews are allowed under Moses to divorce and remarry for many reasons. Then Jesus on that same day at 4 pm teaches on divorce and remarriage. Is there ANY evidence the Jews instantly started to divorce current wives to run back to past wives? None and in fact as I showed you God forbid them going back to former spouses. It is just more foolishness.

Many say that in the New Testament Jesus changed His mind and started a new law of no remarriage at all.  That means Jesus caused all those (prior to His mind change) to be in sin and now they have to repent from it and divorce (isn't that a sin?) their current wife. Total foolishness again. Jesus kept, enhanced and fullfilled the law he did not change it.

We stand against divorce (unless for biblical reasons) in believers today.

Marriage permance heretics like to say Jesus said WHOSOEVER divorces and that means ALL people anywhere.
But the fact is: what we did as unconverted people is NOT held against us today regarding marriage. Read 2 Cor 5;17 and it says....

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

I ask you, does a past divorce fall under.... ALL.... things?
Of course it does because there is no such thing as marriage for life in the cases where divorce has happened.

When you examine all of God's Word it is very clear. God allowed for divorces and a pre conversion divorce is under Jesus blood. But you better walk obedient now as a child of God knowing better or it is willful sin and not covered by Him. Hebrews 10:26
