Let No Corrupt Communication Proceed Out of Your Mouth

In the beginning the world was spoken into existence (Genesis 1) and then in John 1:1 we see that in the begining was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.  Then verse 14 says the Word became flesh.  How much more do we need to see how important words are???

Proverbs 18:21 says:
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Using words for communication is something people do without thinking but for born again believers this should not be so as 2 Corinthian s 10:5 we are to "bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ"  We are to use our words carefully because we will give an account for every one (Matthew 12:36)

On the other hand of watching what comes out of our mouth the following verse shows more depth to what our words should be doing.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Ephesians 4:29

Corrupt in the greek is sapros and means: rotten, putrid, not fit for use, useless, bad, worthless.

Not only are believers to be careful of what words we use, we are to also make sure they are edifying and minister grace unto the hearers.

Sadly though, it's too often this verse is ignored:

Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. (James 3:10)  

And words pour forth out of mouths that are not disciplined in the ways of God, bringing disgrace and reproach upon our Father in Heaven.  

Heed the following verse...

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. (James 1:26)

There are many verses on bridling the tongue and watching what words are used, these are commands and not suggestions.  

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath (James 1:19)
