Quite often we receive emails asking if smoking is a sin so we decided to examine God's Word and discern the subject. It is well known that cigarette smoking is harmful to the human body and has no other purpose than to pass nicotine into the blood stream to give the person inhaling it a light buzz or energy. Many people think it calms them but the truth of the matter is, when the nicotine dissipates the person goes through withdrawals, only another dose of nicotine can settle that craving and diminish the symptoms. Smoking causes irritations within the body especially the lungs building up phlegm and fluids with the possibility of cancer so it is clear that smoking is dangerous for the human body and is of no good value. Let us see what God's Word says about such things.
In the case of a born again believer who has repented and been born again and is striving in obedience, he is now a new creation. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
A new creature in Christ has left his old sinful habits behind, he doesn't carry them with him.
A true child of God has been washed by the blood of Christ:
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11) A believer is cleansed of his repented sins and being sanctified; how can a smoker be sanctified if he is still sinfully smoking?
God's Word teaches us that our bodies are not our own, but have been bought with a price...
Is smoking a just, pure, lovely, virtuous, praiseworthy activity?
Believers are told to be holy, how can smoking be holy?
Did you know that addictions are a form of idolatry?
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? (Romans 6:16) Those who smoke are servants to their bodily cravings and the sins that fulfill them (whether of "sin unto death").
Smoking costs a lot of money and a believer is to use God's money wisely, not only that but it totally destroys a believers witness if they look and act sinfully like the world. (Read Romans 6 about continuing in sin.)
Jesus said: And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. (Luke 9:23)
Jesus said to pluck out sin...that's a drastic measure we should take!
While we know that quitting smoking can be very difficult as it does result in withdrawal symptoms, we also know we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13)
Let us heed 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Would we toss away our souls for a flesh destroying, addictive habit? For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? Luke 9:24-25)

God's Word teaches us that our bodies are not our own, but have been bought with a price...
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Believers are not allowed to do with their bodies such as they used to before they were born again; Christ now owns a their body.
Believers are not allowed to do with their bodies such as they used to before they were born again; Christ now owns a their body.
And if that isn't enough read 1 Corinthians 3:16-17
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
This is serious business here, the body/temple is nothing to take lightly and should be cherished and taken care of just as we see how the temple of old was taken care of.

We are to use our bodies to the glory of God in righteousness: Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (Romans 6:13)
God's Word doesn't stop there, let's take cigarette smoking through the Philippians 4:8 test:
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Is smoking a just, pure, lovely, virtuous, praiseworthy activity?
Believers are told to be holy, how can smoking be holy?
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:15)

Question: If Jesus appeared in your life today would you dare even think of offering Him a cigarette? Do you realize that if you are a believer who has been born again and has the Holy Spirit dwelling in you and you smoke, that is precisely what you are doing.
We encourage those of you who claim the name of Jesus Christ, to forsake that sin (and all sin) and follow Him in obedience. We encourage you to quit smoking, pluck it out per Matthew 5:29-30
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
There are many ways a person can overcome the addiction and when we are weak, He is strong.

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
