Just the other day I was reasoning with a man (who claims to be a teacher of God's Word) and as we discussed some worldly aspects of things going on at a youth birthday party, I made the comment 'you know even birthday parties are rooted in paganism.'
He told me I was officially ........CRAZY! (That happens often when I teach God's deep truth to those who are blind.)
Leaving him behind, if you take just a minute to do some secular history study you will find what this man clearly did not know. (He was not very wise or discerning.) Birthday celebrations are indeed rooted in old pagan ways and most every history resource will clearly tell you that. Birthday celebrations are linked to false Egyptian gods, then people celebrating their own birthday linked to stars and astrology. That is demonic by nature and it lives on even today. Even the "cake , candles and wishing" are all inventions of man with dubious false or pagan ways behind them.
We need to remind you that satan is at the root of paganism. People either follow God or Satan. (See John 8:43-47) The apostle Paul warned that satan is the God of this world. (2 Corinthians 4:4) Clearly birthday celebrations are of the world.
We left the practice of birthdays many years ago when we saw it has NO basis for God's true people.
For the worlds people this is meaningless as they do what they desire for their own lives. But for the Christ follower who is called to OBEY God (John 14:15) it is worth a closer look to see what lies behind this age old practice and to see for one's self 'does it match up to God's Holy Word and ways for His holy people'?
Ask yourself this, have you been duped (again) into doing more false pagan ways without knowing it?
(Millions have and for examples see our Easter and Christmas articles at our teaching blog that show how pagan they are as well) http://spiritandtruthdiscernment.blogspot.com/
As with all truth the place to look for the God fearing person is the Holy bible. It alone is our model and example on how to live for the Lord not man's false religious or error filled traditions. Having said that and after seeking out its truth we can report to you:
you will NOT find one example of a "saint of God" celebrating their birthday.
The bible tells His people to NOT do as heathens (or pagans in this case) do in Jeremiah 10:
Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
Over and over you will see God calling His people (Israel) out of the false ways around them to be set apart ( holy) for Him in the Old Testament. And even in the New Testament His people are called to come out of all lies and darkness unto holiness.
With all of that said, is that enough to rule out a godly person from practicing such things? Let us take a look at scripture to see if there are any examples of birthday celebrations found in the Holy Word? We do indeed see 3 examples of birthday celebrations in scripture. But before you say 'see that means it is acceptable', let's see who was doing it and how did it turn out?
In Genesis 40:1-23 we see an account of a birthday event in Egypt. If you go read that you will see it was done by the pagans and it ended in the death. (execution of a man)
Next would be Matthew 14:3-11
Here you will find Herod's party gets carried away and leads to the beheading of John the Baptist.
Finally we have Job 1:4 where Job's sons are celebrating their day. If you read the book of Job on into chapter 3 you will see God did not approve. The result in the end is the death of all of his children. (Job then curses the day he was born.)
If you study the bible for yourself and stop following man made ways you too will see none of God's true saints celebrated birthdays so why should His people do it?
You may be saying 'but what about Jesus birth...the bible clearly records that right'? Well let's take a closer look at that to see the truth shall we? We would agree the event of the birth of Christ is recorded as it was long foretold He would come to save His people. But where it is a birthday celebration for Him in scripture?
Some questions to ask yourself:
*Do we see a birthday party for baby Jesus?
answer... 'no'. (It is more pagan ways that created the Christmas holiday not God's Holy Word or instruction to His people.)
*Do we know Jesus birth date recorded by God for us?
Answer...'no'. (It was pagan Rome that merged Christmas to a pagan sun god celebration on Dec 25th)
*Didn't the wise men come to see a baby and bring gifts for His birthday?
Answer....'no'. (If you study the account, they came when He was a small child (not a baby) and it was a custom to bring gifts to a King which He was. (It had nothing to do with a birthday.)
Please go read the account for yourself starting in Matthew 2
In truth, it is man and his pagan ways that have twisted God's Word into celebrating this age old pagan thing called birthdays. You will not find ONE account of God recording anyone's birth date or of anyone celebrating a biblical persons birthday.
The wisest man who ever lived ( Solomon ) said this:
A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
Ecclesiastes 7:1
The birth of a man into a fallen world that is set for God's judgement is not really a joyous thing to celebrate. It is a fleshly thing at best. This life is a vapor then it is gone forever. (See James 4:14) Without Christ and new life/obedience to Him, what is there to celebrate in the long run? What should matter to one who is born again in Christ is their NEW birth in Him (see John 3:3) and the day they will see Him / be with Him at their death or His coming again. To lift up and celebrate pagan birthday ways is in a sense (to our discernment) poking a finger in God's face and making your own way when He commanded that we OBEY His ways.
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him Hebrew 5:9
Now that we have proved birthdays are pagan and God not once marked a birth date or endorsed them to be celebrated; we ask you to please realize this: The focus a Christian should have daily is on Christ not themselves. In John 3:30 John said He must increase so I must decrease.
Giving a special day to someone and celebrating it, lifting them up to much attention goes directly against this teaching, does it not? Also the Apostle Paul tells us to proclaim Jesus birth in 1 Corinthians 11 right?
No not at all, Paul says we proclaim His DEATH till He comes!
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
1 Corinthians 11:26
Man and his pagan ways has so much backwards and is in opposition to God's Holy Word. Are you following man's false ways and traditions or are you following the pattern set in God's Word for His true people? We see today that most who claim Him as Lord ( denominational religion) are actually following more after the ways of pagan man then after the True and Living Holy God. What do you think God would say about that?
We think Jesus said it best in Mark 7: 6-9
What are you following today?
God's Holy Word as perfect instruction for your days or pagan ways like birthday celebrations born in error, sin and rebellion against the Living God?
Birthdays and the celebration of them are indeed pagan and rooted in false spiritual ways.
So you must decide whom you will serve today? (Joshua 24:15)
Pagan man or a Holy God?
We know learning these deep truths will forever change the life of a person growing in Christ and that is good. We are to become a vessel for Him and leave all false ways for His glory. If you think birthdays are a small matter remember Jesus words in
Matthew 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
We must remind you that if you claim Jesus then you claim truth as He is the truth. (John 14:6) So then why would you keep false pagan ways like birthdays? The truth is it is a fleshly thing and we are commanded to kill our flesh for the Lord all over the New Testament Word.
Are you killing your flesh by OBEYING Him in all your ways?
Romans 8:8
So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
2 Corinthians 6:16
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
Rev 22:14-15
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
1 Peter 1:15
Is it light or darkness to do old pagan ways?
Is a birthday celebration build on lies or God's truth?
Is it holy ( set apart for God) to do spiritual things pagans did in the past?
Note: the entire party/celebration customs of a birthday is rooted in old roman pagan ways of feasting and festivals. It is not approved by God.

Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
