Finding Plain Christian Clothing

In this article we hope these ideas help people find ways to biblically clothe their household in a God honoring way.  It can be overwhelming in this world of sin finding ways to do so but with God all things are possible.  Before reading on, please read the article here ( http://spiritandtruthdiscernment.blogspot.com/2017/12/plain-christian-clothing.html) and learn why our clothing, as Christians, should be plain.

We want you to wipe away any conceived notions that have been ingrained in you about clothing such as how it should look, quality, how it is perceived by the world etc.  Born again followers of Jesus Christ are to simply cover their body with cloth.  When you simplify it that way, it makes it easier to deal with and do.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1-2)

The first thing women usually say is 'I can't sew!'   We would say that with all the thrift stores, rummage sales and online areas to find used or discount clothing, a woman can get by today with a few simple sewing ideas, not needing to know how to sew full outfits.  (Although if she does know how, that's great, maybe she can help sew for others.)    There are sewing machines that are very basic, very affordable and if a women can find extra large clothing, she can easily learn how to sew a few hems and adjust a few seams.  Women can learn some simple basics such as this for the Lord.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

How does a woman begin this journey of outfitting her family especially if she has children?  With prayer that the Lord will provide and give her strength that she will overcome the temptation to compromise and instead stand strong for the honor of our King.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (Philippians 4:6)

Men and boys are easier to clothe as they can wear extra oversized T shirts, button up shirts and baggy jeans or very loose sweat pants / jogging pants.  Before you scoff at wearing sweat pants and a baggy T shirt, check to see if they line up with the scriptures of being plain, loose, form covering and not costly?

Young girls who are not developed yet can wear baggy T shirts with skirts or jumpers.  There are tutorials online that show how to sew very simple skirts and jumpers for young girls needing only a low sewing skill.

Women can be a bit harder to find clothing for because of all the mature shapes but not impossible.  (With God all things are possible amen?)  One of the easiest outfits for women are skirts and button shirts in extra large sizes.  Yes, you may possibly need to go up many, many sizes to get something loose and that's where the simple sewing comes in. Hems can be taken up, sleeves can easily be shortened, if a shirt is so oversized that the wind blows it up it's not hard to sew in under the arms a bit.  Skirts that are a bit tight can be cut and let out with a small panel added in.  (Mature women should not wear T shirt or soft cotton materials as they cling to womanly forms.)  Be sure that if you buy or sew jumpers (whether for young girls or older) that they are very loose with materials that have a bit of thickness to it so when you bend over they do not snug up and expose your backside or cling to the front and watch out for slits, they need to be sewn shut or a panel sewn in.  Very simple to do.

We travel the country for ministry and business and we can vouch that for every thrift store we walk into, there are usually some over sized button shirts for women and if there aren't then go to the men's section and then alter them.   Skirts can be more difficult but then again we find that if you go to the extra large sizes you will usually find more basic clothing that is totally workable with a few simple seam stitches.  Draw string skirts are a great option as they can be shared among women in the family of close sizes.  (Ebay and other online used sites and forums often offer them.)  Be patient and diligent and eventually you will be able to clothe your households.

So what does a follower of Christ do when they read and learn what the scriptures teach on clothing and then see that their households are not in line?  Are they in sin as they work their way through their wardrobes?  The Lord is looking for willing obedient people and if you are working hard to repent of that sin of adornment and replenish your house in plain godly clothing, the Lord has grace in that area.  A few suggestions to accelerate that process would be to go through the clothing of your household and choose to keep only the plainest articles of clothing that you can get by with until you can replace them, then as soon as possible start replacing them with plain clothing.  It may come to a point where a woman has only one or 2 skirts or dresses for a while but this is a small sacrifice for the Lord, amen?

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:11-13)
