God's Holy Word is very clear on how His born again redeemed saints should live daily and we teach all about it at dontperish.com and being SOBER is one such topic.

In the past, I have struggled when around say small children as it is easy to laugh, go to their level and it can led you into innocent foolishness that takes you from being sober.

Of late ( 2019 ) I have been convicted about my own soberness as it is easy to allow yourself to fall into too many things that take soberness away from you.  In my case, thankfully it was nothing vile or sinful but even in my attempts to make a brother in hard times laugh, I feel I have crossed sober lines. I believe I need to repent of it all as I want to remain in a life of serious truth and soberness is part of the focus on God's Word we need daily.

Now, I am not saying we cannot laugh as the bible clearly says laughter is a good thing and I do laugh indeed often!

Proverbs 17:22 - A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Job 8:21 - Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing.

Psalms 126:2 - Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.

But to keep it all in check, we are to imitate Paul and Jesus ( 1 Cor 11 ) so please show me ANYWHERE they cracked jokes or went out of their way to be less then sober minded? ( chapter and verse please ??? ) Clearly it is NOT in God's holy Word is it?

So what about being biblically sober minded?

1 Peter 5:8 - Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

The word sober in the Greek is nepho

It means to abstain from wine ( drunkeness ) but it also means to be calm, collected in spirit, temperate and circumspect.

Clearly it does not mean you cant laugh but there is a fine line between being sober minded to laughing and then becoming silly and acting out in foolishness. (I crossed those lines at times and I have corrected that)  Those ways we must avoid to keep ourselves blameless before the world and the Lord.

We see man made religious places today using silliness and foolishness (comedy shows, youth groups, carnal events ect) to draw people into their false religious places. I recently heard of a pastor (we witnessed outside of his false religious building) where he had them playing some vile "poop toilet" games all for so called fun. This clearly is pushing the sober minded line.....

Here are some more examples we have exposed:

The truth is that biblical soberness is something that can elude us all in this carnal, foolish, fleshly and fun seeking culture so that is why I raise it up to the true saints to consider and not be swept away.

What does God's Word tell us about being sober?

Acts 26:25
But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.

Romans 12:3
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

2 Corinthians 5:13
For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.

1 Thessalonians 5:6
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

1Thessaloians 5:8
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

The bible is very clear that leaders should be sober minded:

1 Timothy 3:2
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

Titus 1:8
But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

More verses on soberness that apply to woman, men and the youth.....

1 Timothy 3:11
Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

Titus 2:2
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

Titus 2:6
Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

There are even more verses on soberness....

Titus 2:12
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

1 Peter 1:13
Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

1 Peter 4:7
But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

So we see many commands to be sober. Being sober minded also means to be on guard and ready to stand lest we fall away into our own sin or that of the world around us.

Keep in mind the end times are coming so one day when satan and God's wrath will fall upon the earth and all its people. If you are NOT sober and watching, living holy and upright, you will be caught off guard just as the people in Noah's flood! We want better for you all...

Please learn from my mistakes will you? If you have a spouse, children, grand children, brothers/sisters, co workers, family or whatever; test your relationships to the Holy Word and see if soberness is ruling there? Or have you allowed other sinful, false ways to creep in and deceive you and affect your ways over time?

We are commanded in the bible to take every though captive (2 Cor 10:5 ) so focus and endurance is needed to remain in the saving faith.
While this is quite the daily challenge; it will help you to be obeying the Word and being sober minded... if... you desire that daily. Of course sober minded ways are the signs of God's true people who are born again of the gospel. ( test yourself to it below at the links )

**Please be extra careful in your dealings with the world when it comes to laughter and such as it can lead to many things that are not glorifying to God.

I hope this article has gotten you thinking about soberness and the dangers of not being that for God's glory and your own walk of faith/obedience.
