This is a very private/personal issue so I wont go into great detail but I will offer some options. Everyone needs to use the bathroom daily so if you are going to go on a homestead ( off grid ) you will need a good way to handle that area of life. If you opt for traditional homestead plumbing with running water; then forget this post. If you are interested in the simple off grid way, then read on! ( this can also work in the van life, with a few modifications )
No traveler or starting out homesteader should be without one of these. The idea and function is very self explanatory!
Many have also found a great way is to go the composting toilet route.
There are many different kinds so do your research and educate yourself on which one you may choose. You can buy a expensive indoor unit that burns the waste up or you can make and use a simple system. Many people use is a $3 / 5 gallon bucket under a camp toilet seat ( $11) and sawdust. You then use it and add the saw dust that helps keep down odor and once its full you empty it into a bin covered with straw and it turns into dirt over time. Or if your local codes allow it; you can dig a pit outhouse and use that like they did in the old days.
