12 Volt Deep Cycle Battery 

 Tip #26

It is vital to have a power source in your van to have lighting and charge your phone when your van or generator is not running. This is best carried out by a extra 12 volt battery wired into your van's power system.

 You will need to following:

 *a 12 Volt "deep cycle" battery  ( about $100 ) 


*a battery case for safety (  $10 ) 

*a good battery charger to run off your generator ( $30 )

*wiring to the battery to your inside of van / generator ($20) 
( if you are not good at wiring / have a pro set this up for you or study to learn how. It is not hard but you need to get if right or you could have a short / fire ) 

 Here is a picture of my set up with my battery in the generator housing. See the battery box on the lower right.....


NOTE: you do not want your battery inside your van unless it is in a sealed case/compartment as they give off gases when charging and also they can explode in rare cases. 

 This battery system gives you lots of freedom as you can have led lights inside the van and you then charge phones off this battery system. You can do this by adding some charging ports in places inside the van. ( again...a pros job if you need help there ) 

 Some people have gone with a power inverter that changes the 12 volt power to AC power.

They use it to run other items like coffee makers and such but we like simple and so we function just with led lights and charging our electronics on the 12 volt battery system direct. You decide that.... 

 ***Most batteries need a monthly checking of the water levels. 

 An extra battery is just another nice feature of van dwelling life you will want to have in my opinion. We run our generator daily and it charges our battery up fully in about a hour or so.
