St. Valentines Day.... Rooted in Love or Fornication?

For those who love Jesus Christ as their Lord, the bible (God's Holy Word) is their guiding truth in all matters. It is that Eternal Word alone that gives us the wisdom and the right path to follow that will lead to eternal life and to be pleasing to the Father with our daily lives. In its pages we find instruction that sets us apart from the fallen world, we can know good from evil, holiness from sin and lust from love; all for His glory. One such verse is found in Ephesians 5:25

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it

What can be more loving then the bond between a man and a woman in the God created union of marriage?
God's Word is full of instructional verses for us regarding godly love. In fact, Jesus made it the number one command in the New Testament when He said to Love God with all your heart! see Matthew 22:37

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

With love on our minds; as we write this article it is February and the holiday many know as St. Valentines Day is right around the corner. We are thankful that as biblical Bereans (Acts 17) we go to God's Word in ALL things so we do not celebrate this holiday nor have we since we were born again in Christ. Since it is not taught or instructed in God's Word, we knew it had to be a tradition of man. For some reason, this year we asked ourselves what is this so called special LOVE day about and where did it come from so we researched it. We have to be honest and say we were appalled to learn of the true history/origins of this event called "a day of love"  by the world around us.

Before we lay the AMAZING facts out to you about this so called day of love; we want to be clear and say we are in no way inferring that if a man gives a card, candy or flowers to his wife on this day that he is now being a pagan or doing spiritual rituals. The un-regenerated people of the world can do as they please and will answer to God one day for that. No, this article is aimed at true born again believer of Christ who wants to walk after Him in total obedience, holiness and purity as the Word tells us to. We know this fallen world/culture has MANY strange and even occult ways that have been handed down over time that today are toyed with just for fun. (See Halloween) Christians are NOT to be of that fallen world and are to avoid such things for God's glory and their walk in Christ. In Romans 12:2 it says this:
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God
From this verse we know His true people are to avoid ALL the ways of the world, shed their old lives/customs and seek God's will in all things.

With that in mind let us now lay out for you the origins of St Valentines Day. Many people believe it was rooted in the early roman catholic faith and it involved a saint. That only tells a small part of the truth to this holiday. In some quick bullet points we will lay out the facts that you can go off and research and verify them for yourself:

1) The roots of this holiday go far back to pagan Rome and a mid February celebration called Lupercalia
(it means day of the wolf)

2) The celebration involved sacrificing dogs/goats (revered for their sex drive) to various Roman gods
(many believe it was mostly about god Lupercus and Juno the goddess of sex.)

3) The pagan priests would rub the blood of the goats on their bodies and run the streets in loin cloths touching women with the bloody goat skins to increase their fertility and to remove curses. This event was mostly about "sexual activity via fornication" and not good, pure godly love at all.

4) These young ladies would then have their names put on cards placed in a bowl and men drew the cards to see who they would be fornicating with for a whole year; until the next pagan Lupercalia celebration.

5) Cupid (the god of erotic desire, not love) got mingled into this event and his roots go back way back to the days of Nimrod (baal) and Nimrod Tammuz who was called Cupid as the god of the heart. Some say he was really a demon of fornication. Note: the bible mentions Nimrod and Baal in several places.

6) Even as early Christianity grew the celebration of Lupercalia remained. Then in 496 AD the pagan roman Pope Gelasius turned it into; St Valentines day. (he named after some RC saint) Some love stories were added to the holiday in the attempt to change/convert more pagan people to his religious system and the holiday carries on to this day in its adjusted current form. (Candies and flowers and were added over time and the focus today is called "romantic" love. Clearly the roots of this pagan event were born in fornication and lust. Sadly many man made denominational places practice and honor this day that clearly is not of God.

 7) In Rome their god was known as Lupercus, in the Greek culture he was called Pan and the Semites called Pan, baal. His roots go all the way back to the tower of babel, Nimrod/Tammuz and Babylonian pagan worship. The bible speaks of Tammuz in Ezekiel  8

8.) The bible warns about the last days that earth will be swept up in this Babylonian false religious ways.
Revelation 17:5
And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
(Note: the roman catholic faith is built on this same false Babylonian system of "mother son worship". We will do a post on that to come soon.)

Most important to note is God NEVER told His redeemed people to celebrate a worldly event about "human lust / love" at all. Now before you say we have all kinds of pagan things around us today"; that is true. But if something has spiritual connections and is tied to pagan occult worship or practice; God's Word says His true people must reject it to obey/honor Him. If the facts above are not enough to make you see the pagan roots of this holiday, consider this.

*The red color of Valentines Day is not for love at all but for blood (animals killed to their pagan gods)

Have you ever wondered where we get certain cultural practices from? One has to wonder "if" the current day custom of a man being called  a "wolf" for chasing after women may well have been rooted in the pagan "day of the wolf" event when men looked to see who they would be fornicating with via drawn cards at Lupercalia? It would not surprise us as mankind / satan has a way of passing down many sinful habits and perverting the good and godly ones given to us by God Himself.

After hearing these facts (sex and pagan gods sacrificed to) do you think there could have been evil influences on a holiday of this nature? Can satan fool people into ignorance and doing his will by covering things with the appearance of good or by using trickery? When we go to God's word we see clearly why His people are to test all things and then avoid what is evil even if they have been adjusted and changed to mean something different today. His people are NOT of this world remember (Romans 12:2) so why would we do pagan ways like the fallen world?

2nd Corinthians 11:13-15
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The facts are in on this so called day of love and they do not measure up to what God's set apart (holy) people should be a part of. If you are not a believer today and are of the world you may laugh at this information. Please go to this link and listen to the gospel will you? Honestly, Valentines Day is not the main peril before you because unless your born again in Christ; you will perish in your many sins and we love you enough to tell you the truth here.

If you do claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ today; we would ask you to repent of partaking in holidays of pagan roots that God forbids for His true believers. The same thing applies to Easter and Christ-mass as they are pagan as well (see our blog for articles on those holidays) If you say that you believe you have the biblical freedom to practice what is of darkness, paganism and of the world; please provide those scriptures verses that your basing that on will you? We cannot find them in the Holy Bible. We find only verses like this:

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
2 Corinthians 6:17

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Jeremiah 17:9-10

Please guard your heart and your family from the wicked things of this culture. Mans heart is a dark place and a holiday like Lupercalia (today's Valentines Day) is more great evidence of that.

As we said at the start of this article; true love is ALL about good and godly ways, not the things of this fallen carnal world. Godly love sent Jesus to the cross and there is only one path to heaven. It is through new life in Christ as Gods Word tells us in John 3:3 and John 14:6. Then the best love you can ever focus on is that which is given to the Father who is worthy to be praised!

We hope this information will draw you closer to the Lord in spirit and truth worship and rejecting ALL of mans false ways like Valentines Day!
