Don't Cast Your Pearls Before Dogs and Swine....

Have you ever offered something of great value and worth to someone who totally just ignored,  wasted, smeared it or tossed it aside rather then cherishing it? That has happened to us all at one time or another. It would be foolish to continue to offer it to them wouldn't it? But sometimes in our zeal or care for others we will continue to offer what they need but they choose to defame, waste or mock and this is not a wise choice at all. (We have been guilty of this in the past.) As always there is much wisdom to be learned from the study of the Holy Word of God.

There is a famous bible quote from Jesus Christ that even many non believers will often use.

It is found in Matthew 7:6 where Jesus said:

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

What is the message the Lord was trying to give to His people here? Let's look at the root words starting with the meaning of Holy.

This word in the Greek is:
(hag'-ee-os)
sacred (physically pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially consecrated): - (most) holy (one, thing), saint.

So we see a Holy thing is what is pure and set apart for God which is His Truth/Word. (His saints are also called to be holy in 1 Peter 1:15 as well.
)

Dogs ( koo-ohn ) are NEVER seen in a good light in God's Word as they were lowly detestable animals that dwelt in trash heaps and carried diseases.

The word pearls in this verse is:
( mar-gar-ee-tace) It means a pearl from an oyster. It was something very rare and of great value as it is still today in most cases. (To a true believer it is the gospel truth that is most precious.)

In this verse swine (khoy-ros) was simply to mean another such lowly animal that dwelt in mud wallows and they were even unclean to the Israel people.

Note: rend means to tear apart or break.
(Isn't that what many people do to Gods people when they proclaim biblical truth? They either tear them up verbally or at times physically as well.)

When we put these words together and understand their true meanings, we can see that the Lord was telling us to not cast something of great value  (His Word and truth) to anyone that would just trample on it and then attack you over it.  This is true wisdom indeed!

Today there are many mockers and scoffers. Peter said it would be so in the last days:
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts
2 Peter 2:3

It is easy to get drawn into a word fight with those people who (like swine and dogs) will trample (not care)  the value and truth of God's Holy Word. It is often far better at times to not even answer those types of carnal minded mockers even if they lie and slander in a attempt to draw you into their ways. Scripture shows us that our Lord and Savior did not always answer His enemies.

In Matthew 12:1-8 He did answer them.....
At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?

But in Matthew 21:23 we see this...
And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

In fact; when the Lord was being questioned by Pilate He said nothing:
And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marveled greatly.
Matthew 27:12-14

Jesus saw their hearts and refused to give them the answers they sought at times. While we cannot see into the hearts of men we can their fruit by their words/ways and then we can correctly judge accordingly how we shall deal with them for God's glory. It is not hard to see those who will trample God's Word if we are discerning. It is never wise to cast the pearl of God's Truth to  such people who don't desire that truth, true repentance or holiness before the Lord.
In fact, it is a sin to do so as God's Word says GIVE NOT.  That means don't.
What does God's Word tell us about such people, that are likened to the dogs and swine who hate/trample the truth? Here are just a few verses:

deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked
Proverbs 2:13

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly
Proverbs 26:11

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
John 3:19-21

And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2 Thessalonians 2:10

This teaches us that the truth of His Word is reserved for those who will either hear it and desire to know it better or for those who are born into God by His spirit. It is "not" to be tossed to those who are of the fallen world, still loving and living in their sinful un-regenerated lives who will defame it truth when they hear it. (They live in spiritual lies and carnality which includes many religious people as well.)

God's precious Word is for those who follow Him, love the Word and obey those truths:

And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
Acts 5:36

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him
Hebrews 5:9

And just how are His true holy set apart people expected to receive His Word and Truth?

How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.
Psalm 91:6

Clearly you can see believers are not called to give or cast His pearls of truth or even answer those who care not for it. The difference between those who cherish the truth and those who cast it away and even attack it (as futile as that may be) is clearly seen.

If you encounter such a person as you live out your walk with the Lord and your witness; heed the words of the Lord to the Apostles:
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
And they went out, and preached that men should repent.
Mark 6:11-12

Let us walk in wisdom and NOT cast what is Holy to dogs or swine, lest we be sinning in doing so. (Those who will trample it. )  We are to cherish the precious Word and truth of God and only share it with those who will not toss it carelessly aside.

Proclaim the good news gospel and pray for those who mistreat you that they may come to the knowledge of the truth and escape their fate which is the eternal judgment before a Holy Angry God.
