In this article I desire to show the biblical pattern of baptism is immersion in water NOT pouring or sprinkling as Roman Catholic pagans do (and many other unbiblical group do today).
The word baptize in Greek really means ... immersion.
That seems simple enough to grasp doesn't it?
If we did a deep in depth study we would see the Old Testament had something similar as a archetype with the Mikveh or cleansing pools. God required things that were deemed unclean to be cleansed in water to be made clean by the law which is a forerunner of baptism today.
Moving back to the NT Word and pattern we see the following scriptures that PROVE it was immersion by which John the Baptist, Jesus (was baptized) and the men in Acts performed baptism.
*How did John the Baptist do it?
Mark 1:5
And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
You take people to a river to go and do what? Put people into the water. (To pour ....you only need a jar of water.)
*Lets look at how Jesus was baptized:
Matt 3:16
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
No confusion there it was immersion!
How about the Apostles method of baptism?
Acts 8:38
And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
What does clean water do? It cleanses amen?
Being immersed totally into water is a powerful "symbol" of what Jesus has done for His people who are totally immersed into Him.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:7
I will now list all the verses that show pouring used in Holy scriptures:
THERE IS NONE!
The truth is, it was the later false unbiblical men in the 2nd through 6th centuries, then the pagan Roman Catholics that reduced baptism down to pouring vs the biblical model we see in scripture. They baptized babies and this was their preferred method to do it simply and quickly. Like with the Lords Supper, this modified way was done for control by the priests / false leaders and not for biblical reasons or example, as we can see.
Note: some bodies claim to be fully biblical yet they make up their own program to serve God. In this case its a pour-rogram!
They are only deceiving themselves and they need to repent.
Not sure what else we need to see as the scriptural example is set for us to obey. I want to be clear, if you HAD to pour to be baptized having no large enough pool of water, God is graceful and that is fine vs no baptism at all. But if you have the ability to immerse and follow obediently what Christ and all the early saints did, why don't you do it?
Jesus said go make disciples, baptize them and teaching them to OBEY all He commanded. Matt 28:20
Baptism by immersion is the method we see and we should obey if we can and we claim to be walking in His ways!
