Hitch Basics For Van Dwelling Life

Some people will never want or need anything beyond just their basic van. But often others items are needed ( like a generator ) and you will need a hitch installed as pictured below to make it all work. 

In this article, for Van Dwelling I want to cover the basics of a van hitch that goes on the back of your van. This allows you to either pull a trailer or install a cargo carrier for a generator. This is not a project to do yourself if; you are not mechanically inclined so, seek out a pro. You could save some money by buying a hitch online then taking to have it installed. You will want a 2 inch receiver hitch. ( that is the opening that takes the cargo carrier bar.
You will buy a hitch based on the load you intent to use with it. If it is just for a generator then under 500 lbs is your goal. If you ever plan to pull a heavy camper or trailer, make sure you get the hitch rated for that job. Around $100 average gets a decent hitch ( I have seen them from $60 to $200 ) and about the same to have it installed. It gets bolted to the frame of your van then you will need a wiring harness for your lights. The most common light plugs are a 4 plug flat or a round 6 pin connector based on what your doing with them ask your mechanic on that.



Having a hitch gives you more options as you van dwell. It is not a complicated process and it will pay for itself in a generator set up or if you pull a small trailer for storage. Again; make sure you let a pro set you up if you have never tackled a job like this before then down the road you go!
