Keep Your Van Cool

As we travel and preach the gospel all over America via our van life, one big challenge has been to keep it cool in hot climates when parked or camping. With summer coming, I thought I would write about things we learned that may help you out. The following are basic things to keep in mind to battle heat build up inside your tiny van home:

1) the color of your van is huge as white is good for less heat, while black makes it a oven. (keep that in mind when buying a van) Also making sure your van is insulated as this will go ALONG way to keep the heat out; esp the roof. We saw a 50% change in heat when we insulated our van roof and walls with even a small amount of insulation. (a article on van insulating to come soon)

2) we have found the best option for heat issues is a roof vent like this that you can keep open all the time, even in rain.

They really let heat out and in our van it made a HUGE difference! (like $65 total)

Note: you can get ones with 12 volt fans in them too for about $100 dollars

3) other tips would be to leave windows cracked to allow heat to leave or add vents in your side windows to let heat escape as well.
(see my article on window rain guards that help in keeping windows cracked) We have even used these port holes as a good less expensive options. (like$25.00) You can take out windows in the back and add these in with wood inserts.

4) While air conditioning in your van helps as you drive, it is useless as you sleep or when you are away from the van. Some people add small fans or even house window air units in their vans and run them from a small 2000 watt generator in really hot situations as they camp. (see my generator article) This can be done by removing a window glass and adding wood with the air unit mounted in it. (like $125 total)

5) Other people have added the big roof top air units but they need a big generator and they are kind of pricey (like $800 or more)

6) some simple cheap ideas that help are use reflective material in all windows to reflect the heat out. We found this very helpful! (like $20)

7) for sleeping at night, we have always got along fine with small battery fans or rechargeable fans that move the air around you in bed. (like $20 each)

8) screens on all your windows is a HUGE help but sleeping at night with windows open, I do not recommend it. You decide on that and you can see my article on windows screens as they are easy to make.

9) Some people open doors partially and use a chain for security to let air in but keep criminals out at night.

10) Finally always position your van so the windshield is away from the sunshine and of course look to park in shade whenever possible.

As you may or may not know, van life is full of challenges!!!
To be honest, keeping your van cool is one of the most challenging areas of the van life. You can do it easily by just running a generator all the time with fans or air units but they is not a option for many. Be creative and look for ways to insulate and vent out your van before the heat builds way up and you will do fine.

I hope these simple cooling tips get you thinking?
