Homestead Chainsaw's...a Must!

If you homestead and can either have land with lots of trees to cut for wood or if you can get logs free or cheap to cut up, you need a good chainsaw. I have used saws my whole life and I was a chainsaw carver for about 5 years so, I know a bit about them. The following are some basic tips for you but first.....

Warning!!!! Chainsaws are deadly dangerous so get some training in safety gear and how to them correctly at the start or you may be missing some fingers or worse yet, end your life. And NEVER EVER cut down big trees yourself ....until.... you have had some training from a person well versed at it.
Heating your homestead with wood is a great way to be independent and save money as well. And there is no better eat source then wood for comfort on a cold day. Moving on to the chainsaws available, there are many brands. I have always had good history with Jonsred and Stihl saws. (Mikita electric saws are awesome)

Here is some basic tips for getting a homestead saw:

1) do not buy a cheap saw, get a quality one that will last. ( $250 to 600 buys a good new saw / I am not big into used saws myself either )
2) get one that is sized to the wood you will cut as big logs need a bigger saw ( 14 inch bar on up to 48 inch or more )
3) learn to sharpen your own chains with a hand file as it saves money and gives you freedom in the woods
4) keep your saw clean and use fresh gas always
5) get a log lifter as it really aids in cutting wood on the ground

6) If you have never cut with saws before always have someone around in case you get hurt.
7) any wood over say 4 to 5 inches in diameter spit it as it will dry faster.
8) buy some extra chains to have on hand
9) get anti vibration gloves they help as saws really beat up your arms and hands and put some stabil in your gas / chainsaw if you wont use it for months on end
10) a electric battery saw may be a good starter so you get the feel of cutting with a chainsaw. I highly recommend this one as I have used it for many years:

There you have my basic tips on chainsaws for a homestead. Get cutting, stay warn and be SAFE!!!!!
