Places to Camp/Finding Them

One big hurdle of van life is having a safe place to camp and sleep over night. The smaller your rig the easier it is to stealth camp in places and just blend in. Yes you can buy a camp spot nightly but those get really pricey and can be hard to find at times. 

The following are places we have found for camping as we travel all over America:

1) Walmart's
2) Lowe's
3) Truck Stop's
4) City Parks
5) Cracker Barrel's
6) BLM Land 
7) Some grocery Stores
8) Home Depot
9) Federal Lands
10) Rest Stops
11) County fair grounds
12) National Forest Land

These are the ones we have found available to us but there are many more for sure! Be wise and scout them out to see if they are safe places to camp. 

Note: 
Make sure you always called ahead to each spot as not all let you camp over night. Another thing is make sure you are a quiet and respectful guest. Pick up after yourself and leave the area better then you found it. When you camp in a parking lot, do not set up came like you would as of you were in the woods. Stay low key and just sleep there then, move on. It also pays to know something about the area as some towns have bad crime areas it is not safe to camp in. Do your research for days ahead and you will be far ahead.

As your getting close to a area you want to park in, you can search the web and ask for free camping in that area. Often websites will pop up.

Check with City Hall  

You can ask the police as well in a town as they usually know about the free parking spots

Trucker apps can also be a help to you to locate truck stops


One thing for sure it is always a adventure when van dwelling. Be prepared to be woken up and asked to move on at 3 am by the police, at some point. You have not van camped till that happens! :) 

This is a life for a select few. At times, I compare it to walking on razors edge as you cant relax but those seem to be few and far in between. We love it and always miss it when we are not on the road van camping!
