Question:
Hello,
I was wondering if the Holy Spirit leaves a person, can the person ever get the Holy Spirit back? Or are they condemned forever?
Thank you so much for your help

Answer:
**** Thank you for the question. It is a good own and the bible does not go into great detail about how the spirit moves in or out of us. We do know the spirit is a mystery to us as Jesus in John 3 says:
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
It is a unknown to us exactly how it works in the NT as it now is indwelling in us. In the OT it was only "upon" men like David and it could be removed.
See Psalm 51:11
We do see a dire warning in Hebrews 6:
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Many say this seems to be about those who do not just sin; but have turned away from the faith in Christ completely. We do know that if you fall into sin, you can repent and come back if you forsake your sin. If you are with Christ and you turn away from the faith totally it may be a very hard road back; if at all. But Romans 11:23
And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.
seems to say the unbelieving "can be renewed" to come back. Then some say that is about Israel and not a person? Indeed it is a deep topic/complex for sure that I cant unpack fully in this short answer.
I will say that I would use two areas of scripture to answer the question as best as I can; without adding to the word.
In Ephesians 4:30 we learn we are sealed with the spirit.
That word sealed does not mean guaranteed but it is a earnest(down payment) of what is to come; if we endure. The Jews were sealed with circumcision but they could be lost in unbelief/sin. See Romans 11
While I cant tell you exactly if, how and when the spirit comes in and out, I can tell you a believers eternal fate can change based on their state of being at their death. The bible is full of warnings or NOT falling away. Here is a article on that topic, sealed:
The Prodigal son in Luke 15 also shows us some key truth about salvation. While it is NOT directly about the holy spirit, it is a parable about a person with God the Father (alive) who then leaves in sin. Then he repents to come home and the father says, he is alive again when he was dead! This leads us to believe that you can go in and out of eternal life if we choose willful sin. Heb 10:26 backs this up as do many other verses. Here is an audio on that topic:
**The only unforgivable sin is blasphemy of the spirit which is really is a form of unbelief. I would say in most all cases; a person can regain your standing with God via a repentive heart willing to forsake sin and walk in covenant with him. (I can know all cases or details of each one of course)
In closing, I have no idea how or when the spirit goes in or out (no one can know this from scripture) but I do know that 1 John 1:7 says we can be cleansed and forgiven of sin if we walk in the light/truth.
That is great news! God is merciful and ready to forgive in Christ if we will humble ourselves and repent / forsake sin. Do not let the devil / or anyone steal your hope. Christ is a GREAT hope reconciling the lost to new life.... if.... you will seek after Him with all that you are?
Spend your time seeking the Kingdom of God/righteousness and Jesus said the rest is added unto us. See Matt 6
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
God be praised
