This article is to give the the BASICS you will need to live in your van and thrive in it. Yes we know, some people get very fancy and go the very expensive route with wood cabinets and detailed lay outs. We focus on function, simple and inexpensive so I will just give you the minimum areas you will need in your van and you can decide to go beyond that or not. *Keep in mind we did our van inside for around $500
Moving on these are the areas you will want to address to be comfortable in the van life:
1) if you have a empty cargo van, you need to insulate the ceiling at least or it will drip on you if you do not. Also a insulation on the floor is key in cold climates. You can decide to insulate it all the walls or not. A lot depends on your climate and where you will be living. ( more to come on this area.... )
2) you want to arrange the van so it fits your needs for storage, living, cooking and sleeping. I recommend you do not make anything permanent till you camp a while and then adjust it. I like simple portable plastic storage bins and tables vs all the fancy bolted in place wooden stuff. ( yes everything must be fastened down for sure though or it flies... )
3) a comfortable sleep place. You decide what that means but DO NOT skimp on sleeping comfort. God designed us to sleep or be miserable! ( we went with a queen bed and we have never regretted the space it takes up ) We have lots of storage under our big bed too. Also, layers are the best vs one big heavy blanket and temps can change a lot in van life. A perk is a nice heat pad in cold weather as well!
4) you will need a good place to prepare food, cook and then sit/eat. We use a simple folding table and a metal shelf for cooking / food storage. It was already in our van from a plumbing contractor. Our table can go outside and we like being able to put it away of need be for room.
5) you will be sitting in the van at times to ride out rain, to rest or work. You need to make sure you have a comfy place where you can sit a long time. Space is limited so decide if you want a move-able seat or something bolted in place? A big bed is a nice place to sit and we like move-able chairs then we secure things with clamps or remove-able bungees. Flexibility is key to van life!!!
6) you want to be comfortable/safe when driving so I have found good side mirrors are a must. Also for safety, I recommend a dash cam and a back up camera as they are cheap investments that can pay off. I like to use a memory foam seat cushion as they are great and move-able as well.
7) you will need good window coverings for privacy. We use silver reflectors for summer and black insulated covers for cold weather. We use magnets to hold them in place.
8) storage is key so find every little nook you can to store your needed items. Be organized as we found that it will make van life far more enjoyable for you.
Plastic bins worked for us and if need be, a car top cargo carrier can add to storage needs as well.
9) you will want to have good inside lighting to run off of a 12 volt system or your generator power. We use three main lights on our Ford cargo van.
You will also want to have a way to recharge your electronics off the 12 volt battery or generator.
I will cover this in more detail soon....
10) no van life is complete without a good cooler. We like it over a electric or gas fridge as we get free ice at gas stations 95% of the time and it does not take any power to run. We will have more on our cooler soon.
***This is not a all inclusive list just a get started list to help you see basic needs to van dwelling life. Sister debbie will have detailed tips for the inside operation of the van life to come soon.
( I just eat what yummy things she cooks, ha!! )
We will be adding to this article over time.....
