Buying Your Vehicle
So you have decided to try van dwelling life and you want to get a vehicle to do it in. The truth is you have many options based on your needs, how many people involved, budget and long term goals. We have seen people start out in their cars, mini vans and also very expensive rigs. We know of men who work live in their $500 4 door cars and a lady who lives in a old $3000 mini van at Walmart. They are all kinds of campers out there these days!
I have seen situations all the way up to a rich man who contacted me about van life and he was looking at a $70,000.00 dollar van!
You need to decide what vehicle you want to start out in and begin your search. We believe a nice simple cargo van is a great option but you can make do in many types of minivans / cars as well. Researching and deciding is all part of the process you will go through. While all of that is really up to you, I have some basic advise to give based on my experiences.
Note:
As Christian's we are called to be good stewards of the money God gave us. I do not believe anyone needs to have a $70,000 van to live in as that reeks of excess which can harm your witness and it defeats the van life way really.
What you do need is simply a good, sound safe well maintained vehicle to drive and house you. You decide what to spend but I will tell you my experiences as a guide. When we decided to get a van we looked for a good used one. ( brand new was just a waste of the Lord's money ) We found a good used one for only $3000 and I did some replacement work on it and it has served us very well for over 3 years now! Thank you Lord....
Here are some basic tips on vehicle buying for van dwelling:
* never go in debt or buy with a payment/debt free is the way
*save up the money to buy cash / it gives you power at the buy
*always buy used to avoid the new car mark up
*when you buy used, be prepared to spend money on repairs
*if you do not know mechanics / get a trusted opinion first
*do not but a vehicle over 200,000 miles
( or be ready to do many expensive repairs needed )
*be prepared to spend money/basic repairs to have it made good and safe ( new tires, brakes, tune up etc )
*buy a empty van and add to the inside ( camper vans are pricey )
*go simple on the inside ( we spent less then $500 total on insides )
*think simple not fancy ( basics work best in van life )
*get a vehicle you can park easily in a space / you feel good driving it
Those are just some basics of "vehicle buying" for van life.
You can start in your car, your minivan or go out and buy a cargo van with a lifted turtle top. Making those decisions are part of this awesome journey and remember; you an always change over time and upgrade vehicles. Getting starting is the hardest part so; make a plan, work your plan, take some first steps and get going, this life is short!!
The bible says..... life is a vapor!
We will be adding to this list over time with detailed articles on the vehicle specifics.
