Rain and Sun Fly for Van Dwelling





We were out and had a rainy day that gave us a challenge. See it was not raining much at all but some rain was still coming in our two side doors when we sat with them open. A cover would have been nice for sure. 

Then another day, we had it was hot and sunny. As the sun was baking our cooler by the open doors and we both thought a small sun shade would be nice. (a small rig not our big full awning I made)  See that post here:

 We talked at it and decided it would be very nice to have a quick small cover over our two side doors for light rain and sun shine when the doors are open. 

 I got to thinking about a solid material roof to set in place, that did not work. Then I thought about a commercial van roof that pulls out and they are hundreds of dollars! 

It was then I remembered my tent camping days when we used light weight fabric fly's for both sun and rain protection. I knew I had a piece of fabric roof material from a pop up awning the wind had destroyed. It saved it for just this project; but I did not know that at the time!

 I got it out, opened out doors, set the fabric in place, used magnets and some clips to secure it, cut it and sister Debbie sewed it up for me.  The result was a FREE sun and rain fly for our tiny van house. 


It is not fancy but the green looks natural and it will keep light rain and sun out of our van when we want the side doors open for air to move freely. 


  As a final touch, I did spray it with some water proofing liquid and it will do a great job for us for many years. A nice perk is it rolls up into a small zip lock bag and goes in our generator box, ready to give us protection at any time.

 In truth, van life is about simplicity and being able to adjust with what you have.  I think this project shows that pretty well. We hope it encourages some of you to get in your van and get going to a simple life on the road!
